Why did you become an entrepreneur?
Some of my earliest memories were working alongside my father at his technology services company before he passed away. That experience informed my dedication to academics, as well as my curiosity in the financial inclusion space. As I made my way through law, banking, and technology spaces through the earlier stages of my career, I found myself frequently considering the high barriers of entry in addressing financial inclusion opportunities, and felt driven to take the initiative to problem solve and enter a space that was prime with potential.
What’s the hardest thing about being an entrepreneur?
I believe one of the most difficult components of being an entrepreneur, is constantly being ready to embrace (and convince others) to embrace change. We are required to continuously consider how innovations improve and disrupt existing operations, and how to anticipate and outpace consumer demands to remain relevant. That being said, this challenge is also inherently ripe with the opportunity to problem solve, innovate, and lead by example.
What’s the key to developing successful partnerships?
Successful partnerships are based on cooperation and flexibility, while also understanding that big transformations need to begin with small changes. The key to developing a partnership of this nature is to be able to understand core processes and values, and be able to adapt to meet those partners where they are and offer innovative solutions to get them on the road to where they would like to be. Being able to think with a new lens, and offer solutions that don’t reinvent the wheel, and instead complement their infrastructure to work in small digestible use cases is a great way to develop partnerships that grow in a sustainable way for both parties involved.
What does success look like for you?
As an entrepreneur, success has many definitions. There is the obvious financial evidence of a successful project, but more so, it’s also important to regard the sentiment on the team that’s involved in the project: are they passionate? are they happy? Are our partners satisfied? Did we solve as many problems as possible, in the most innovative and direct approach that we could? These are some ways (tangible and intangible) that we are able to gauge the true success of our initiatives.
What’s one thing companies can do to build more diverse teams?
Create a company culture that attaches the success of the company and its teams to the presence of greater diversity throughout. Diversity leads to important dialogue, out-of-the-box thinking, and robust solutions that support sustainable companies.
What’s your one piece of advice for aspiring entrepreneurs?
Be patient, but not afraid. Make the jump to start somewhere, and be confident in your vision and dreams, and more importantly, in your problem-solving abilities to face the problems you will encounter along the way with finesse. So, jump. The canyon is not as wide as it looks. Keep your eye on the goal and don’t be surprised when it changes. It’s the nature of things.
